In the whirlwind of financial ups and downs, there’s a special kind of strength that emerges when you find the right support. Sam knows this firsthand. Her journey with Amethyst Place isn’t just about balancing budgets and paying bills; it’s a testament to resilience, growth, and the power of community.
Reflecting on her journey, Sam shares, “One thing I am grateful for about the financial literacy program here is it helps. If I ever have any questions I don’t feel alone. There is always someone I can go to that’s been through this stuff.” It’s that sense of camaraderie and shared experience that makes all the difference.
“I am enrolled in Pawsperity (a local nonprofit focused on providing pathways out of poverty through the skill of dog grooming) and will graduate this spring. I am working part-time at Scent Hound as a pet tech,” Sam mentions with pride. It’s not just a job; it’s a stepping stone toward a brighter future, one where she’s building skills and independence.
But perhaps the most transformative aspect of Sam’s journey is the way it’s reshaped her sense of responsibility. “I’ve never felt like a responsible person, and I still don’t. But Amethyst Place has opened my eyes to let me know that my daughter Uriah needs me,” she confides. It’s that unwavering love for her child that propels her forward, even when the path seems daunting.
Since being at Amethyst Place, Sam has achieved significant milestones. “I now have a checking account. And I have a car, license, and tags, thanks to Amethyst Place’s direct assistance program,” she shares proudly. “Having reliable transportation is necessary for me and my daughter.”
But with progress comes new responsibilities. “I’m paying car insurance for the first time this month – $358 monthly,” Sam reveals, acknowledging the weight of financial obligations.
As Sam navigates part-time work and financial planning, there’s a newfound sense of purpose guiding her steps. “I feel like a better mom for it,” she admits. It’s a sentiment that speaks volumes about the transformative power of determination and love.
Looking ahead, Sam’s dreams shine bright on the horizon. “In two years, I’d like to move out of Amethyst and be able to get a different car. My long-term goal is to be able to purchase a home, one that has a large enough yard for Uriah to play in,” she shares. It’s a vision of stability and security, one she’s determined to turn into reality.
But amidst the dreams and aspirations, Sam holds onto valuable lessons learned along the way. “Everything you want, you don’t need,” she reflects. “Nobody else is here to take care of Uriah except me. If that means I have to bust my butt to take care of her, to get her to school, to get her shoes, to forego eating out, I’m going to do it.” It’s a simple truth that’s had a profound impact on her journey, guiding her towards smarter choices and a deeper appreciation for what truly matters.
Prior to her time with Amethyst Place, Sam faced her fair share of challenges. “I had old utility bills and my probationary and court costs which amount to about $700,” she recalls. It’s a reminder of how far she’s come and the knowledge she’s gained through our financial empowerment program.
If she had to rate herself on her financial outlook now? “I’ve learned a lot but I have a ways to go,” she admits. But it’s clear that Sam’s journey is far from over. With each step forward, she’s rewriting her story, one of resilience, accountability, and unwavering hope.
In the end, Sam’s journey with Amethyst Place isn’t just about financial empowerment; it’s a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the power of the human spirit. And as she keeps moving forward, one thing’s for certain: the best is yet to come.
